Planning the front cover image

Planning the front cover image

Magazine Name

Rave
Models

Alisha, Laura and Marie
Camera height/angle/distance

I have decided that I would like to have the camera reasonably close to the model. This is to follow the convention of ‘typical’ magazines. Also gives the model and the look of the magazine a sense of importance. I am going to keep the camera at the normal angle, so the horizon is level. This will allow me really focus on the Model and not so much on the angle of the picture, but of them.
Location

The location of the photo shoot will not matter too much. I would like one of the images to have a naturalistic background, to add some reality to the magazine. Other than that, I want to take my images in front of a plain, preferably white background. This will allow me to edit out the background, to give the magazine a professional photo-shoot look.
Lighting

I would like the lighting in the photo-shoot to be quite bright. I think that would make the images look better with the magazine look good with the bright colours of the magazine.
Mise-en-scene (incl. props, costume)

I will not use any props in the production of the images. I have decided to do this to place the main focus of the models and not just the props that they carrying.  Also I would like the models to be wearing fashion items, that will be relevant to their ages, as I don’t want the magazine to display negative images to the target audience.
Attempted connotation

I wanted the model to look happier than some of the other magazines. I wanted the models to look like normal children, fit and healthy and I wanted the models to represent of all ages in the target audience and to be good role models at the same time.
Planned denotation

I wanted the models to display appropriate clothing, and for the images to look bright and look good on the magazine. I used a flat angle, to give the impression of reality.
Contingency (in case of model absence/weather)

I will have a contingency plan, by asking more than the models I have put at the top of the page as I though then I would have models, for if they were ill or unable to attend.  I have no issues with the weather as the images will be taken inside, and I will be taking them in October, so snow should not be an issue.
Thinking points:  I have yet still to think about the makeup usage on the models, however, I may not use much makeup to make the models look natural and good, so they are not going to be heavily altered and photo shopped like they probably would be on competing magazines.

Comments:
I have decided that I will take a few images of the models, a lot more than I will use. I think that this would be the best way as then I can fit the images to the pages and not the pages to the images as this may look a little rubbish.

Shot Plans

I have decided that I want the images on my front cover to be of leading artists in the modern world of music. I wanted the main image to be a medium long shot of the artist and I wanted them to be striking a funky pose. This way I can attract the younger audiences and the older one of my magazine target audience.  I also feel that this would be the best way to attract the audience but also to make the magazine informal and look cool for the audience to be seen read.  I would also like some images on the front cover of other artists, as I feel like this would be the most effective. I would like to have on their more medium long shots and maybe even a two shot to demonstrate a group.

On the contents page I would like to have a close up image of an artist, just to keep the magazine alive and to make it look inviting and aesthetic. I think that by having a small image it will break away the text and by it being a close up, there will be nothing else to focus on and just the artist in question.

On the double page spread I would like to have around 3 images of the artist. I would like to have medium longs shots again, but for them to be layered so that the images covers the whole of the page. This would make the pictures look better more aesthetic and to make it look more like a professional article. I may also adjust the photos to make them more funky and appealing to the audience.

Evaluation Of My School Magazine

The audience for my school magazine was A, B, C1, C2, D and E. I think that I have catered for the audience. The primary audience was the students of the school and the secondary audience of the school is the parents and all of the stake holders in the school. I think that I have catered for the audience as I have included images of the school pupils and all of the pages in the school magazine are related directly to the pupils but the other audiences of the school magazine will be able to enjoy them as well.

The masthead of the school magazine is bold and is coloured in red, orange and yellow. The connotation of this is that it is a bold masthead that stands out from the background. The denotation of the masthead is that it is bold. This means that the school is bold and that students are not afraid to stand out form the crowd and that they are not afraid to be bold. The colour of the masthead could imply that the students are fired up about school and that the school is hot on expectations and what they expect the students to achieve.  This also refers to the title of High Expectations.  However I feel that the font on the mast head could have been a little better as the font may be hard for some people to read. Next time I will use a more defined font so that more of the primary and secondary audience will be able to read the font properly.

I have had to take out all of the backgrounds form the images that I had decided to use in the magazine. I took the images in a busy environment and decided to cut them out of the background to make them stand out more easily. I think that the magazine would have looked a little more realistic and better if I had taken some of the images in a less busy background and kept some of the backgrounds. I feel that the audience may have been able to connect with the pupils that are on the front cover as they will know the surroundings on the front cover. It also may have been a bit more exciting if the front cover and the contents page had had a real background.

I think that the semiotics of the front of my school magazine is positive. The girl at the bottom of the page is looking up and the denotation of the picture is that she is gazing in to the future. This could imply that the school are giving her the options that she needs to do well; also she could be looking up to the title of the magazine. This could suggest that she is happy with the high expectations of the school. The bigger picture of another girl smiling could suggest that she is very happy with the school and that she is keen and eager to work and do well. This is good as demonstrates that the schools pupils like that the school has high expectations. However to make this image better, I could have smartened up their uniforms slightly. This would have meant that they are demonstrating the high standards of the school but from the images they look a little bit scruffy.

I have had to make a few decisions in the making of my front cover and contents page. I decided that on my contents page that I would not have images of the pupils. I did this as I wanted the pages to stand out and not the pupils that surrounding the pages of the magazine. However, if I did the magazine again then I would have images of the school surrounding the page as the crayons looked a little bit babyish.  Little images would make the magazine look more professional and exciting to the audience. I have taken the purple out of the colour scheme as I thought it was to girlish to be put on a unisex magazine.  Over all I think that the magazine was a success, it met the target audience however, with the improvements it would be even better than before.

School magazine cover so far

thi is my school magazine so far...

Front cover images revisit

Changes

Due to the magazine orientation and the images that i had previously taken, i hvae had to take more photos and choose one to be my main image. I chose some shots of my freinds and i had the intention to cut out the backgrounds. this is so that the image will be the main focal point.
