Semotics of Images

When talking about semiotics of images there are couple of categories to think about. the denotation and the connotation. The literal meaning is denotation and the connotation is what the image would suggest. Within an image semiotics are important, as it looks at what the reader will see and feel when they read/ look at the magazine.

In an image the connotation of someone putting their hands on their hips is that they are confident and are comfortable with the situation they are in. However if the image of someone is curled up in a ball this could suggest that the person is lonely, scared or anxious.

In my magazine I would like the students to look confident. So the images that I put in the magazine will have to have the students striking a pose so that I achieve this aim. I would also like them to seem important, so I will use a camera angle that looks up at the students. This way they are higher than the camera and look superior to everyone else. I would also like the students to be doing something school related. Like holding a book or something. This then gives the audience a feel of what the magazine is about.
